Australian national symbols

Our symbols represent what is unique about the nation and reflect different aspects of our cultural life and history. The story of Australia's symbols is rich and colourful and fosters unity within Australian society.

Australia's national symbols that have been officially chosen (via vote, legislation or proclamation) to represent Australia and its states and territories include:

Protocol and international visits

Our Protocol and International Visits Branch provides high-level support for the Prime Minister’s overseas visits and Guest of Government visits to Australia, as well as virtual meetings and summits with Heads of State and Heads of Government.

We also support and coordinate ceremonial and state occasions involving the Prime Minister, including State Funeral and Memorial Services, Ceremonial Welcomes at Parliament House, official hospitality in association with the Prime Minister’s XI Cricket Match, and events of national significance.

Official gifts

Australia is not traditionally a gift giving country. However, good manners, goodwill and the respect for other countries’ customs may necessitate the presentation and receipt of gifts.

Government

At PM&C, we work on the implementation and ongoing delivery of key government programmes, policies and initiatives. Our role is critical to government – we provide advice and guidance about the operations of Cabinet and the Federal Executive.
