Women and Women’s Safety Ministerial Council communique: 15 August 2025

The Women and Women’s Safety Ministerial Council (the Council) was convened today in-person in Sydney for its first meeting since the swearing-in of the 48th Federal Parliament. The Council agreed that it is critical that all governments and portfolios collaborate to achieve progress on gender equality and end gender-based violence in Australia.

A recent collaboration between the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government (BETA) and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has empowered consumers to seek out a better energy plan, and stimulated a more competitive market for Australians.

Navigating the energy market can be challenging. But, thanks to new research from BETA, a cheaper plan could be hiding in plain sight on your next energy bill. Research has shown changes to Australian energy bills have helped consumers to better understand their bill and the market, and make the switch to a better plan.

I would like to thank the Australian National University, and particularly the Indonesia Project, for inviting me to speak tonight at this 60th anniversary gala dinner.

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we are meeting, the Ngunnawal people, and I acknowledge their ongoing connection to Country.

I pay my respects to their Elders – past and present – and extend my respect to any First Nations people who are with us tonight.
