Open Letter to the Australian Public Service - 30 March 2022

30 March 2022

Dear colleagues

Yesterday the Treasurer handed down the Federal Budget 2022-23. The focus for the APS was clear: We must support the Government to build on Australia’s economic and social recovery, and support Australians by providing high quality services where and when people need them.

Across the APS, many of you have worked incredibly hard to support the preparation of this year’s Budget. Funding from the Budget supports the work you do. The advice you provide and the services you deliver are an important contribution to Australia’s economic recovery.

Long-term Insights Briefings

Current Long-term Insights Briefing

We are currently exploring the future of government service delivery beyond the current cycles of reform.

We are working with the community, industry, academia and the APS.

We want to better understand:

  • the vision Australians have for service delivery in the future
  • how people in different communities want to work with the Australian Government in a reimagined service delivery system
  • what this could mean for how the government operates.

Consultations for the current Long-term Insights Briefing have closed. Results will be published later in 2025.

Long-term Insights Briefings

Long-term Insights Briefings support the Australian Public Service (APS) in creating policies that best fit the needs of the Australian community now and in the future.

Long-term Insights Briefings:

  • focus on important and complex policy issues
  • take in a wide range of perspectives, examining the views of the Australian community, academic and industry groups
  • provide deep insight into how issues may affect Australia in the medium and long-term
  • form part of the evidence base for policy-making over time.

Review – Port of Darwin lease

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has finalised a review into the circumstances of the lease of the Port of Darwin. The review found that:

  • there is a robust regulatory system in place to manage risks to critical infrastructure, including the Port of Darwin;
  • existing monitoring mechanisms are sufficient and will be ongoing; and
  • as a result, it was not necessary to vary or cancel the lease.

The Government has accepted that advice.
