What is a long-term insights report?
Long-term insights reports explore medium and long term trends, risks and opportunities that affect or may affect Australians.
Long-term insights reports bring together the collective knowledge from the Australian community and experts across Australia. The process enables innovative thinking about issues over a longer timeframe and provides the opportunity to consolidate our learnings. The reports are not government policy but provide an evidence base to inform future policy thinking and future government decision-making.
Long-term insights reports are a new requirement under the Public Service Act 1999 and are commissioned by the Secretaries Board. As defined in the legislation, the purpose of a long-term insights report is to make available:
- information about medium-term and long-term trends, risks, and opportunities that affect or may affect Australia or Australian society; and
- information and impartial analysis relating to those trends, risks and opportunities.
This long-term insights report was prepared by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) and was overseen by an interdepartmental committee comprising Deputy Secretaries from PM&C, the Australian Public Service Commission, the Department of Social Services, Services Australia, the National Indigenous Australians Agency, The Treasury, the Department of Health & Aged Care and the Department of Home Affairs.
