Through the AUKUS partnership, Australia is steadily building capabilities across government and industry to steward and operate our own fleet of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines from the early 2030s (Pillar I). As we do this, Australia will continue to consult with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to develop a non-proliferation approach that sets the highest non-proliferation standard for the acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine capability.
AUKUS Group drives a whole of nation approach to provide advice and support to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet on implementation of AUKUS Pillar I and Pillar II (Advanced Capabilities), as well as naval shipbuilding and sustainment.
We work with Commonwealth agencies, state and territory governments, our US and UK counterparts, and industry to support implementation and ensure key enablers like workforce, infrastructure, environmental approvals and supply chain are on track.
