The Administrative Arrangements Order (AAO) formally allocates executive responsibility among ministers. It sets out which matters and legislation are administered by which department or portfolio.
On 13 May 2025, a new AAO was made. The AAO:
- reflects the renaming of Departments of State
- transfers responsibility for law enforcement policy and operations from the Attorney‑General’s portfolio to Home Affairs portfolio
- transfers responsibility for bankruptcy, personal property securities and consumer credit reporting from the Attorney General’s portfolio to the Treasury portfolio
- transfers housing, rental and homelessness policy from the Social Services portfolio, land and planning policy and cities and urban policy from the Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (ITRDCSA) portfolio, and construction industry policy and regulation from the Industry, Science and Resources portfolio to the Treasury portfolio
- transfers the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Foundational Supports from the Social Services portfolio to the Health, Disability and Ageing portfolio
- transfers sport and recreation policy and functions from the Health, Disability and Ageing portfolio to ITRDCSA portfolio
- transfers the Net Zero Economy Authority from the Prime Minister and Cabinet portfolio to the Industry, Science and Resources portfolio
- updates the legislation listed in the Administrative Arrangements Order to reflect new, repealed and amended legislation as well as minor corrections
- corrects other matters, including Ministers’ titles.
The AAO as originally made and subsequent amendments are located on the left side bar.
This includes the ‘Amendment to the Administrative Arrangements Order – 26 June 2025’. This Amendment:
- transfers responsibility for policy and services for people with disability from the Social Services portfolio to the Health, Disability and Ageing portfolio, other than policy and services to help people with disability obtain employment
- transfers responsibility for the delivery of services and payments relating to social security, health and other government services and whole-of-government service delivery policy from the Social Services portfolio to the Finance portfolio.
- makes other minor amendments to the ‘matters dealt with’ and ‘legislation administered’ parts of several portfolios.
The current consolidated AAO is located on the Federal Register of Legislation.
