NAIDOC Week 2023

NAIDOC Week is held every year in early July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements, and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that First Nations Australians make to our country and to our society. This year, the theme for NAIDOC Week, which will be celebrated from 2 to 9 July 2023 inclusive, is ‘For Our Elders’. Further information is available on the NAIDOC website.

The Hon Thomas (Tom) William Roper (1945 – 2023)

The Victorian Department of the Premier and Cabinet advises a State Funeral Service for the Hon Thomas (Tom) William Roper will be held at 2pm on Wednesday 5 July 2023, at the Immigration Museum, Melbourne, Victoria.

Mr Roper was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1973 as the Member for Brunswick West, moving to Brunswick in 1976.

Sir James Gilbert Hardy OBE (1932 – 2023)

The South Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet advises a State Funeral Service for Sir James Gilbert Hardy OBE will be held at 1pm on Friday 23 June 2023, at St Peter’s College, Memorial Hall, South Australia. 

Sir James was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1975 and a Knight Bachelor in 1981 for his services to sailing and the community. He was also awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

The King’s Birthday

In accordance with flag protocol, on the occasion of His Majesty The King’s Official Birthday, the flying of the Australian National Flag is encouraged.

Flag marshals in all Australian Government departments, authorities and related portfolio agencies are requested to fly or display the Australian National Flag on Monday 12 June 2023, to celebrate The King’s Birthday. Other organisations are encouraged to follow this protocol. Queensland and Western Australia celebrate the birthday on different dates.

Dr John Olsen AO OBE (1928 – 2023)

A State Memorial Service for Dr John Olsen AO OBE will be held at 10:30am on Monday 29 May 2023, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.

In 1977, Dr Olsen was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and in 2001 he was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia and awarded the Centenary Medal for his longstanding service to the arts. He was also awarded the Wynne Prize in 1969 and 1985, the Sir John Sulman Prize in 1989 and the Archibald Prize in 2005, amongst many other significant awards throughout his distinguished career.

Ms Fay Miller AM (1947 – 2023)

A State Funeral for Ms Fay Miller AM will be held at 10.30am on Friday 26 May 2023 at
Christ Church Cathedral, Darwin, Northern Territory (NT).

Ms Miller was the Member for Katherine in the NT Parliament from 2003 to 2008, and the Mayor of Katherine from 2012 to 2020. In 2021, Ms Miller was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to local government, to tourism, and to the community of Katherine.

The Hon Anthony (Tony) Staley AO (1939 – 2023)

A State Funeral for the Honourable Anthony (Tony) Staley AO will be held at 11.00am on Wednesday 17 May 2023 at St John’s Anglican Church, Toorak, Victoria.

In 1970, Mr Staley was elected to the seat of Chisholm. He later became Minister for the Capital Territory and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Arts from 1976 to 1977, and Minister for Post and Telecommunications from 1977 to 1980. He retired from the Australian Parliament in 1980.

Father Robert (Bob) John Maguire AM RFD (1934 – 2023)

The Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet advises a State Funeral Service for Father Robert (Bob) John Maguire AM RFD will take place at 11am on Friday 5 May 2023 at St Patrick’s Cathedral, East Melbourne, Victoria.

Following his ordination as a Catholic priest, Father Bob served across several Victorian parishes, as an army chaplain and became parish priest of Saints Peter and Paul’s in South Melbourne.
