Care and support economy

The government is working toward a vision of a sustainable and productive care and support economy that delivers quality care and support with quality jobs.

The Care and Support Economy Taskforce (the Taskforce) was established in 2022 in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The Taskforce transitioned to become the Care and Support Economy Reform Unit (the Unit) in 2024 and closed in June 2026.

While the Unit is no longer in operation, the Department of the Prime Minster and Cabinet continues to provide a strategic outlook on the care and support economy by identifying emerging trends and risks and leveraging cross-sector opportunities through collaboration and interdepartmental committees.

The Draft National Strategy for the Care and Support Economy (the Strategy) was released in May 2023. The Taskforce developed the Strategy in consultation with key stakeholders representing care and support recipients and advocates, providers and unions. Key feedback is presented in What we heard: a summary of public consultation on the draft National Strategy for the Care and Support Economy.
