Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the pre-eminent economic forum in the Asia-Pacific region and has been a key vehicle for strengthening regional economies, bolstering trade and investment openness and deepening regional economic integration. Australia was a founding member of the APEC forum in 1989 and has been active in helping APEC achieve its current status. The Office for Women is responsible for progressing work related to Australia’s engagement with the APEC Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy and participation at the APEC Women and the Economy Forum.

Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy

The Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE) is the senior-officials level working group responsible for APEC gender activities and outcomes. The PPWE provides a mechanism to integrate gender considerations into APEC activities, through providing policy advice on gender issues and supporting gender equality where relevant to the APEC process.

Women and the Economy Forum

As the only APEC forum dedicated to gender issues, the annual APEC Women and the Economy Forum (WEF) represents an important opportunity to enhance economic opportunities for women through the APEC process.

The WEF typically consists of three key meetings, including a High-level Policy Dialogue, Public-Private Dialogue and PPWE officials-level meeting.

2018 APEC Women and the Economy Forum (WEF), September 2018 (Papua New Guinea)

The 2018 APEC Women and the Economic Forum (WEF) took place from 3-8 September in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The main theme was ‘Enhancing Women’s Economic Inclusion and Empowerment in the Changing World.’

The Ambassador for Women and Girl, Dr Sharman Stone led Australia’s delegation and delivered two statements - one on the topic of Leadership, and the other on Empowering Women to participate in the Digital Economy.

2017 APEC Women and the Economy Forum (WEF), September 2017 (Vietnam)

The 2017 APEC Women and the Economic Forum (WEF) took place from 26-29 September in Hue, Vietnam. The main theme was ‘Enhancing Women’s Economic Inclusion and Empowerment in the Changing World.’

The Ambassador for Women and Girl, Dr Sharman Stone led Australia’s delegation and delivered Australia’s Country Statement.
