The Australian Government has released the 2026-27 priorities for government funding of strategic policy research.
The think-tank and strategic policy sector plays an important role in driving public discussion and strengthening partnerships on national security matters.
The inaugural annual research priorities are guided by Australia’s national security policy priorities and designed to focus government funding for national security-related research activities.
The research priorities are supported by guidance for Commonwealth funding for strategic policy work which outlines the:
- government’s approach to commissioning strategic policy work
- role of government agencies
- expectations for the sector.
The government’s approach to commissioning strategic policy work from the sector is underpinned by a principles-based framework.
These are key outcomes from the government response to the Independent Review of Commonwealth funding for strategic policy work, led by Mr Peter Varghese AO.
Released in December 2024, the review focused on ensuring value for money, efficiency and integrity, and alignment to Australia’s national interests and evolving strategic circumstances.
Of the 14 recommendations made in the final report, the government agreed in full to 8, agreed-in-principle to 3, and noted a further 3. The majority of the government response to the review has now been implemented.
Changes implemented as a result of the independent review encourage greater transparency, and will promote a stronger and more sustainable sector.
