Nominations to CEDAW for 2021-24 now open

Would you like to help eliminate discrimination against women around the world? The Office for Women invites applicants to express their interest in nomination to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women for 2021-2024.

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) comprises 23 independent experts who are elected by States parties for a term of four years. The Committee was established in 1979 to monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women.

CEDAW members fulfil a wide range of roles and responsibilities. They provide general recommendations to States parties on matters regarding the elimination of discrimination against women.

Committee members facilitate inquiries into severe or systemic violations of women’s rights and review communications from individuals and groups submitting claims of violations of rights protected under the Convention.

Members also contribute to the conversation surrounding discrimination against women through discussion days and representation of the Committee at national, regional and international events.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s Office for Women and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will support the successful candidate in preparing an election campaign to enhance their chance of success.

If successful, this would be the first time that an Australian will have been elected to the Committee since Elizabeth Evatt in 1985.
