Sustainable development goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted in September 2015 at an historic UN Summit.

The 2030 Agenda calls for action by all countries to improve the lives of people everywhere.

From that announcement came 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of social, economic and environmental targets that apply to both developed and developing countries.

Australia will present its first Voluntary National Review (VNR) on our progress towards the 2030 Agenda at the High Level Political Forum in July 2018.

Different federal government agencies are responsible for each of the goals – the Department of the Prime Minister & Cabinet (PM&C), through the Office for Women has responsibility for Goal Five on Gender Equality.

Outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, are important to many of the goals, and PM&C’s Indigenous Affairs Group is assisting agencies with their responsibilities in this regard.

The Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade and PM&C are co-chairing a Deputy Secretary-led Inter-Departmental Committee which is progressing work on the VNR to ensure a whole of government approach. Working together at the government level is one part of the story; the 2030 Agenda is also an inclusive and ambitious agenda which requires engagement by all – including business, civil society, academia and individuals.

Domestically, many government initiatives already go to the heart of the 2030 Agenda and we are pleased that the VNR provides us with the opportunity to showcase the work we are doing to give effect to the 2030 Agenda.
