We celebrate Australian Citizenship Day each year on 17 September. The day provides an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on the meaning and importance of Australian citizenship, and the responsibilities and privileges that come with it. It is also a chance to celebrate our shared citizenship and what it means to be part of the Australian community.

In accordance with flag protocol, Australian Government departments and associated portfolio agencies are requested to fly or display the Australian National Flag all day on Thursday 17 September 2026 to celebrate Australian Citizenship Day. State, territory and local government bodies, as well as non-government organisations, are also welcome to follow this protocol.
