Flag announcement: Allan Moffat OBE (1939 – 2025)

The Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet advises that a State Memorial Service for Allan Moffat OBE will take place at 11.30 am on Tuesday, 16 December 2025 at Melbourne Town Hall, 90/130 Swanston Street, Melbourne, Victoria.

Allan Moffat lived an extraordinary life as one of Australia’s most influential and internationally recognised sporting icons.

Born in Canada, he moved to Australia as a teenager and soon embarked on a career that redefined motorsport. A four-time Australian Touring Car Champion and four-time Bathurst winner, he was the unmistakable face of Ford in Australia. His international victories at Le Mans, Daytona, and Spa elevated Australia’s standing in global motorsport.

A strong advocate for driver safety and the future of racing, Allan served on boards and helped shape reforms. His leadership earned induction into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame, the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame, and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, along with the rare honour of being appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

After retiring in 1989, Allan remained connected to the sport as a mentor, commentator, and advocate. In later years, he supported families affected by dementia as Patron of Dementia Australia.

Details regarding the service and online condolences are available at the Victorian Government's website.

As a mark of mourning and respect, the Australian National Flag should be flown at half-mast all day on Tuesday, 16 December 2025 in Victoria only from all buildings and establishments occupied by Australian Government departments and affiliated agencies. Other organisations are welcome to participate.

  • When flying the Australian National Flag with other flags, all flags in the set should be flown at half-mast.
  • If a set of flags includes the flags of other nations, it would be appropriate to seek permission from the diplomatic representatives of that nation to half-mast their flag.
  • An acceptable half-mast position would be when the top of the flag is a third of the distance down from the top of the flagpole.
  • Information on flag protocol is available on the Department's website.

Your assistance is appreciated.
