Flag announcement: Mr Shane Keith Warne (1969 – 2022)

Australia marks the sad passing of cricketing great, Mr Shane Keith Warne, and advises with the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet that a State Memorial Service for Mr Warne will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday 30 March 2022, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Brunton Avenue, Richmond, Victoria.

Details regarding attendance at the service and livestreaming can be found at https://www.vic.gov.au/state-memorial-service-shane-warne.

Mr Warne made his Test debut for Australia in 1992. A leg-spinner, he set a world record of 708 Test wickets which stood until 2007. He played his last Test in 2007 having taken more Ashes wickets than any other Australian or English player. He also played for his home state of Victoria, Hampshire in England, and the Rajasthan Royals as both captain and coach between 2008 and 2011. In 2011, he joined the Melbourne Stars for the inaugural season of the Big Bash League.

In 2000, Mr Warne received an Australian Sports Medal, for service to sport. In 2001, he was awarded the Centenary Medal, for outstanding service to the Australian and international sport of cricket. He was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the 20th Century, and was inducted into the International Cricket Council Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013.

As a mark of mourning and respect the Australian National Flag should be flown at half-mast all day on Wednesday 30 March 2022 Australia-wide.

  • When flying the Australian National Flag with other flags, all flags in the set should be flown at half-mast.
  • If a set of flags includes the flags of other nations, it would be appropriate to seek permission from the diplomatic representatives of that nation to half-mast their flag.
  • An acceptable half-mast position would be when the top of the flag is a third of the distance down from the top of the flagpole.
  • The Australian National Flag should not be flown at half-mast at night, even if the flag is illuminated.
  • Information on flag protocol is available at http://www.pmc.gov.au/flag.

Your assistance is appreciated.
