Dear Sir / Madam
Thank you for the opportunity to submit an opinion in relation to the Expert Panel on Religious Freedom. I applaud the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s initiative in undertaking the panel.
I would like to recommend the following:
• I support anti-discrimination law being framed in a way that recognises the positive right to religious freedom. I request the panel to extend the coverage of Federal anti-discrimination law so that religious belief is a protected attribute.
• I support the right of religious organisations to hire people of a particular religion to enable the organisation to be led in a way which fulfils its vision and mission.
• As I parent, I request greater legal protection to enable me to educate my child in the way I believe right, including access to religious education in schools and the choice about whether or not to participate in a specific curriculum which contravenes our beliefs.
• I support the right of religious groups to run faith-based schools and receive Government funding on an equal basis with non-religious schools. I also support anti-detriment provisions to protect faith-based organisations from, from example, discriminatory Government funding on religious grounds
I look forward to hearing of the outcome of the panel.

Your sincerely,

Karen Lewin
