On Monday 13 February, the Prime Minister hosted a reception to celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Professionals. Held in the Prime Minister’s courtyard, the event was an opportunity to showcase Indigenous success, ahead of the release of the ninth annual  Prime Minister’s Closing the Gap Report 2017.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the remarkable lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who are thriving and succeeding in their chosen fields, and who are important role models and leaders inspiring the next generation. It was also noted that with university education, there is no gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. This is a critical finding in the 2017 Closing the Gap report.

The Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP also spoke at the event about the ‘stars in the community’ who make a difference to the lives of others around them, the heroes, the mums and dads who hold professional positions and who make a difference in their communities.

The event was attended by Indigenous people from all over the country who are succeeding and contributing to a large range of sectors, including health, disability, education, early childhood, defence, law and justice and public service.

More than 60 Indigenous PMC staff members also attended the event, recognising the success and achievements of individual who contribute to the work of our Department as well as their own communities. Staff were represented from each of the regions across the country.
