The Prime Minister’s XI team announced to play against Sri Lanka at Manuka Oval on Thursday in their T20 clash, will see a blend of youth and experience take the field.

Co-captains Peter Siddle and Dan Christian worked with Prime Minister Scott Morrison to finalise the squad which includes T20 stars Chris Lynn and Ben Cutting. Playing alongside them are emerging youngsters including Jason Sangha and Djali Bloomfield.

At the team’s announcement, Peter Siddle was asked about co-captaining the team alongside Dan Christian.

‘It should be good fun. I’ve captained a little bit,’ Peter said.

‘But co-captained; I’ve never done that before so it will be interesting how we do that. He’s the more experienced one. I think on field, he can take control. I’ll just toss the coin.’

Former Australian great Jason Gillespie will coach the side. The Big Bash League Adelaide Strikers coach has just returned from a successful season coaching English county side Sussex.

Sri Lanka is also expected to field a strong side ahead of a three match T20 series against Australia later in October.

The PM’s XI has a long and storied history. It began after a chance conversation in the library of what is now Old Parliament House in August 1951 between then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies and W.I. Emerton, Deputy Clerk of the Senate.

Though games were not played annually at first, Prime Minister Bob Hawke reinvigorated the fixture and they have been played every summer since 1984.

Since 1951, 9 Prime Ministers have staged the event which included 286 players representing the PM’s XI, 4 of whom were Members of Parliament.

This PM’s XI will face Sri Lanka at Manuka Oval on Thursday 24 October at 7:10pm.
