Welcome to the Cabinet Implementation Unit

“The Government … has an ambitious policy agenda, with a strong focus on long-term policies rather than simply short-term measures.”.

“… we cannot deliver our vision for a modern Australia without an APS that is committed to excellence in policy design, policy implementation and service delivery”.
Prime Minister, 30 April 2008.

The Cabinet Implementation Unit is part of the Strategic Policy and Implementation Group in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The Unit was established in October 2003 to help the Prime Minister and the Government manage and deliver the Government’s strategic reform priorities, including reporting to the Prime Minister on progress with the delivery of these priorities across the Australian Public Service.

In November 2008 the Prime Minister outlined the Government’s policy reform priorities for the future as:

  • a more secure Australia given the new national security challenges we face;
  • a stronger Australia given the long term challenges to our economy;
  • a fairer Australia given the extreme levels of disadvantage that continues to exist among us;
  • an Australia capable of meeting the sweeping new challenges of the 21st century, including climate change; and
  • a new way of governing, particularly increased co-operation between federal, state and local governments; businesses; and community organisations.

These reform priorities are outlined in more detail in the Government’s One Year Progress Report.

A range of project management and implementation resources are available on the Unit’s website. These include:

  • Guidelines for Cabinet Submissions and New Policy Proposals;
  • Implementation Plan Guidelines;
  • Program and Project Management Support; and
  • Further Resources across the Australian Government, States and Territories, international, and other Networks and Contacts.
